JUBACANA CULTURAL DANCE

Aged 8-18? Interested in Dance? Want to try something different?

Join an exciting programme of weekly dance sessions and one-off workshops from around the world leading to performances in Spring 2022 and beyond!

Jubacana is a percussion and dance group for 8-18s. We are looking for dancers to take part in up-and-coming workshops and weekly sessions on Fridays in Oldham.

If you’re based in Oldham, Tameside, or Greater Manchester, come and get involved.

WEEKLY WORKSHOPS

Ideally we’d love it if you attend weekly sessions where you’ll be learning choreography to live drumming with our in-house team. If you can’t make it every week, let us know.

HOUSE & KWAITO DANCE

WITH AYANDA ‘YANDASS’ NDLOVU

Her Southern African upbringing and Western training along with experience in different art forms has resulted in an urban theatrical infusion. Through a contemporary lens, performance is deconstructed, reinvented and re-imagined…

Yandass will be teaching our young dance artists a mix of House and Kwaito dance (South African and Zimbabwean) as well as working on choreography and inspiring us with her incredible energy and creativity. Yandass is now a seminal figure on the Manchester and UK dance and theatre scene and has worked on projects for Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester International Festival, Contact Theatre, HOME and more.

Yandass is also a founder of I M PACT Collective, a community of Manchester based dancers joined by their passion for supporting, creating and experimenting in the underground world of freestyle dance.

HIP HOP

WITH JACK ROBINSON & MEMBERS OF DOPE

Dope Male Performance Co. is a Crewe based, professional hip – hop influenced performance group founded by choreographer Jack Robinson in 2012. Company highlights to date including site – based Olympic Torch Performances, National UDance platforms, Big Up North Dance Theatre Festival & NOW Northwich.

In Crewe DMPC offer classes for boys from ages 8 to young adults & with opportunities for national performances & progression routes into the professional company, this emerging dance company is rapidly gaining recognition right across the UK.

Jack and members of DOPE lead fun accessible hip hop based workshops in schools, colleges and youth groups across the North West. The focus on individuality and finding your own style, alongside learning hip hop styles and skills.

DOPE are supported by Cheshire Dance and have co-commissioned their first professional work ‘Pandora’s Boombox’.

CAPOEIRA

WITH MESTRE PIOLHO & JANE MCLEAN

Capoeira is an exciting Afro-Brazilian art form. that combines dance, acrobatics and music. Rich in culture, history and community, capoeira is an art form where each individual can find their own style and strengths.

Rafael Braga – a.k.a Mestre Piolho is a capoeirista (Capoeira artist) born in Patos de Minas, Minas Gerais – Brazil, where he discovered capoeira at 9 years of age. He left Brazil at 19 to train and teach beside his Mestre in Paris France. After 6 years in France, he relocated to Chester where he started a capoeira group – Balanco na Ginga Capoeira. A new capoeira chapter had begun.

Founder of Balanço na Ginga Capoeira group, Mestre Piolho has travelled to over 35 countries, teaching, learning and performing the artform. He has taught at University of Chester and in schools across Cheshire and Great Manchester.

As well as teaching his capoeira group in Chester, Rafael supervises groups in Stoke-on- on Trent and international groups such as, Honfleur France, Vilnius – Lithuania and Duisburg Germany.

Jane McLean – is a capoeira addict and has taught dance and capoeira workshops at international capoeira festivals in the UK and Paris. She enjoys physically inquiring into inversions, energy, weight and momentum, and improvisation all of which she tries to bring into her teaching.

As Cheshire Dance’s Creative Director, Jane’s role involves managing Cheshire Dance Artistic programme she develops dance across the county, working with diverse groups from professional artists to community groups and schools, inspiring people from all walks of life to create, learn and experience dance!

COST

Weekly sessions are £4 or whatever you can afford and all workshops are currently funded and free to attend if you sign up to regular sessions.
