Jubacana Receives Kerrching Funding

We are delighted to announce that we have been selected to receive grant from the Kerrching – Youth Opportunity Fund! The Kerrching – Youth Opportunity Fund is a pot of money that is specifically for young people.  The fund aims to provide opportunities for young people that will improve their lives and wellbeing.  It is managed by young people from Oldham Youth Council who make the decisions about the allocation of funds.

This funding will allow us to develop important links with the local community and other likeminded organisations to take our project to the next level and engage many more young people in the Oldham area. Jubacana began in Oldham in January 2017 and has gone from strength-to-strength, this important funding will allow us to develop our roots in Oldham and lead up to some great performances in 2017 & 2018.

The Kerrching fund is fantastic because funds are allocated by young people from Oldham themselves who are members of the Youth Council. We look forward to doing great things with the funds and getting more young people in Oldham involved in diverse music making and arts leadership. We will be releasing more information about how the project develops from now until March 2018.

If you know any young person aged 8-18 who would like to get involved, email us as info@jubacana.com or sign up through the website.

New for 2017, we are now based at The Old Museum in Oldham. It’s a great move for us and we are so excited to be bringing back a Carnival inspired youth drum and dance band to Oldham again. We have extended our offer, so now we welcome 8-18s. We’ll have 2 classes, a younger class 8-11s and an older class 12-18s. The sessions will be every Friday after school.

Full information can be found on the join jubacana page

We’re looking forward to making some exciting work and getting more and more young people involved in this inspiring and fun group.

Jubacana Awarded Lottery Funding!

We’re really excited to announce that we received an Awards For All grant from The Big Lottery Fund! We are thrilled that it will enable us to do community outreach with local schools, train and develop our young directors and allow us to reach out to more young people in Manchester! 2016 is going to be a great year for Jubacana.

So far we’ve had some great sessions after we’ve been back in January, including working on new arrangements, getting new members, and welcoming our fabulous new guest artist Yandass Ndlovu, to work on songwriting with us. Check out our rehearsal snippet below:

We are also lucky to have the support of Manchester music wonders that are Band on the Wall and Brighter Sound, The Aviva Community Fund and the One Manchester Community Fund.

Here’s to 2016 and to developing the next generation of creatives and artists, we’re lucky to spend every week with such amazing young people.

If you know any 11-18’s who would like to join the fun, please send them along!

Watch out Manchester!

p.s. thank you to Sara for coming along last week to take some photos of us:

TASTER SESSIONS AT BAND ON THE WALL

We are currently fundraising to help this incredible project reach even more young people. Jubacana plans to launch its next project in summer 2015 to welcome new members to weekly rehearsals at Band on the Wall (Manchester) supported by Brighter Sound. A separate dance element of the project is also set to launch soon.

Whilst we gather support, we have scheduled a series of monthly taster workshops at legendary Manchester music venue, Band On The Wall!! These will take place in May, June and July (see list of dates below) for potential new members to try their hand at drumming, jamming with their melody instruments, singing in Portuguese, and playing alongside top percussionists.

If you know any 11-18 year olds who would like to give drumming and Brazilian percussion a go, improve their skills and meet lots of fellow minded young people to play in a big, exciting drumming group, please share this information.

DATES:

Saturday 16th May | 12.30pm – 3pm
Saturday 13th June | 12.30pm – 3pm
Saturday 11th July | 12.30pm – 3pm
