Summer School 2020
We’re excited to bring you a week of activities for our online summer school!
Monday and Tuesday morning are for everyone (highlighted in green), so we encourage everyone to attend at least those sessions as a group. From Tuesday afternoon things are more optional with specific workshops to choose from. If anyone just wants to attend Monday and Tuesday morning and the zoom on Friday, that’s great, but there’s lots of other things going on through the week to get involved with. Every workshop is accessible.
There are a few optional pre-summer school tasks for Katumba’s workshop, so see below and some things to look at beforehand if you can.
Please let Freya know, you will have an email of how to sign up. If you can let us know what workshops you’d like to attend (you can attend them all if you want!) by 6pm on Thursday 13th August. You will have had an email from her: freya@jubacana.com
All this will be taking place on our normal Zoom link [check your email as we won’t post that here for security]
DONATIONS
At the end of the week, if you’d like to make a donation (pay what you feel) you can do directly here: https://paypal.me/jubacana. This is optional as we want the summer school to be as accessible as possible. Feel free to chat to the team about this.

MONDAY 17th AUGUST – SPECIAL GUEST DAY
11am – 11.30 | Morning Hello [for everyone]
We’ll have a chat in the morning to say hello and speak a bit about the exciting week ahead.
1pm – 3pm | PLAY ALONG WITH KATUMBA! [for everyone]
With Ritchie & Juliana from Katumba
Ritchie & Juliana from Katumba will be delivering a percussion workshop live streamed from Katumba HQ in Liverpool (where we recorded the EP) and you’ll be playing instruments you made yourselves or things from around the house. They have just finished a project where they developed an amazing high-tech solution to connecting with their group and the public with multiple cameras and mics. You’ll also get the chance to make a drum/instrument at home to play along [see videos below]. We’ll also learn more about drumming from Bahia, North East Brazil, and the roots of Samba Reggae. A fun, interactive afternoon with two amazing artists.
Here’s an intro video from their project they just finished. They’ll be adapting this project to a special workshop for Jubacana!
3pm – 4pm | Home Filming [optional]
As part of the week we’re putting together a video and it would be great if you could film yourself playing some of the parts for the final video. This is optional but it would be great to be able to share some of what we’ve been up to with Katumba.
HOW TO FILM:
> You’ll need two devices: one to record the video (like a phone camera) and one to play the music from to play along (like a laptop/ipad/other phone). Film yourself playing along to the video. It doesn’t matter too much about the audio, as we’ll be using the audio from Katumba.
> Filming lengthways, not portrait.
> Send to: email to dan@jubacana.com (if the file is big you can use WeTransfer) or you can send via WhatsApp. The higher quality the better, so email/WeTransfer if you can.
> Get your parent/guardian to help film and send to us to be included in the Summer School best bits film at the end of the week 🙂
Play along to this video and send us your film 🙂
PRE-WORKSHOP TASK – MAKE A DRUM AT HOME – [OPTIONAL]
For this workshop Katumba developed a way to make a drum at home leading up to the workshop. See these instructional videos below to see how you can make yours!

>Bucket > plastic lid > biscuit tin > paper plate > gaffa/duct tape > packing tape > string > rice/pasta > candle > nail > cloth > decoration materials (glitter/bright paper/card/paint)
If you’re making a bucket drum and want to wear it, we’d recommend watching the ‘ how to wear [medium]’ version before you make a skin.
